I love the first four chapters. I am feeling very compassionate for the life style Katniss lives. No Father, an odd Mother that seems more like a sister to Katniss, and a young sister to watch after is a hardship for just a 16 year old girl. Katniss and I, I think would get a long, I know that I don't live that life style, but she seems out going and brave. Out going and brave is the type of person I like as a friend.
ReplyDeleteThe first four chapters were great. It makes me want to keep on reading the book; it is very engaging. I believe that Katniss has a very difficult life. She has to take care of her family pretty much on her own and she has to make sure she can kill game and sell it for money. She is risking her life by hunting, so i think she is very brave. In the first four chapters it is just explaining Katniss, her lifestyle, and how the world around her is. It is very interesting and I would like to read it more.
ReplyDeleteI love the first four chapters also. I felt a bit bad about the way Katniss lived in the beginning. I thought she was helpless until I read about how great of a huntress she was. I cannot help but to think that there is some thing between she and Gale. I have to agree with Abigail when she says that Katniss is brave. The way she took the place of her sister must have taken a great amount of courage. As for her mother, well, I thought that her mother had basically abandoned all hope when her husband died. I can undestand why Katniss was mad at her. I know I would be mad at my mother if she abandoned me. I could not believe that all of that happend in the first chapter. I love the story so far and cannot wait to see what happens. I know that from the looks of the first four chapters that this book is going to be a very good read.
ReplyDeleteI really like the first few chapters. I think that it would be very depressing and difficult place to live. I think that having to hunt for food with one other person would be very challenging. If was in that situation, I would be very overwhelmed.I agree with Abigail and Morgan about Katniss having to be brave. To have to hunt for food for your whole family would take bravery. I would be very scared to have a close friend or a sister's name announced to be in the Hunger Games. I believe that Katniss was very brave to take her sister's place, even though it ment risking her life. I think that shows how much she loves Prim.
ReplyDeleteThe first four chapters were very compelling, unlike other books I have read. Katniss is by far my favorite character. She is tough yet sensitive. I think that once the games start she will surprise the other competitors, her family, friends, and herself.
ReplyDeleteThe cruel world in The Hunger Games is ruled by selfish wealthy people. I do not believe that the manor they treat the district people in is out of hatred but out of fear. However, by ruling the people harshly, they create more hatred. It is this hatred that makes those in the districts dangerous. It reseambles how the Spartan people in Ancient Greece treated the slaves. Both treated those below them harshly out of fear.I do not believe that all those who live in the city are in fear; I suspect that many of them are ignorant to the cruelty their city treats others with. I cannot imagine that a rebellion will not take place in the districts due to their lack of rights.
ReplyDeleteKatniss is no doubt a great hunter and to some extent her families hero. She is perpetually providing her family with food and other goods needed for life in Distruct 12. I believe that Katniss makes herself some form of martyr. Others would take some of the responsiblity that she bears, but she has taken her family's future into her own hands. I admire her for this and if I were put in her place I would probably make the same desicion. But, I believe that she should give her mother and sister some more responsibility; it is not right for a sixteen year old girl to single-handedly care for her family. Yet, it is this responsibility that will make Katniss a fierce competitor in the area.
This book is a perfect example of how strong family bonds are. Katniss seemed more scared when prims name was pulled than when she volunteered to take her place. Most people would not take the place of a friend in an arena of death like the hunger games. But most peope would take the place of a friend or close family member. It would litteraly be like giving your life for someone. i personally believe the adjectives and metaphors the author used were perfect for the scene. He perfectly illustrated how close Katniss family was.
ReplyDeleteasdfghjk....very awesome comment, but who are you? I can't give you credit unless you tell me your name ;)
ReplyDeleteHaymitch is a dreadful, drunken human. He does not help his fellow district 12 inhabitants on their quest to destruction. I'm sure other will agree with my description of Haymitch. However I predict that Haymitch will give them one last word of advice right before they go off to the the Game. I believe that this will in the end help her (or them) survive the onslaught.
ReplyDeleteI don't think my first comment posted so I am going to rewrite it...
ReplyDeleteI find it very easy to sympathize with Kantiss. Her situation seems relentless but she manages. This skill will be very valuable later on in the games when she must deal with the awkward friendship between her and Peeta. She knows that she must kill him but he has helped her in the past so she hopes that it will not come to that.
The world in the Hunger Games is very cruel and harsh. The govenors of this world are very self-centered and treat their people unfairly. One example might be the fact that some of the poorer districts only get 2-3 hours of electrictiy a day, while in the capital and richer districts of the country they get all the electricty they want and more.
ReplyDeleteasdfghjk is jd
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Ian said about the world of Katniss. However Ian forgets one thing. Alot of people in this world live worse than the people of district 12. Almost all of us have sent a letter to Ghana. We all know how bad it is their. Most people in Ghana live worse dan the people in district 12. However their are two major differnces betwween the people of third world countries and the people of district 12. There is law enforcement in District 12. There is almost none in Ghana. And also the people of Ghana are given a helping hand from the rest of the world. The people of District 12 have no such helpingn hand.
ReplyDeleteI feel very selfish when i read this book, because if i had to deal with all of the things that katniss had to deal with i could not succed. All of the things that katniss has learned from her father i believe will help her in the games succed and not get killed. This is a follow up with what matty said I think that it is awkard for katiness to kill peeta because he has helped her when she has needed it the most......Shane
ReplyDeleteI think in the first four chapters were good. They told the reader about Katniss, her family, and Gale. It also told about her daily life and what the Reaping is. She doesn't have a normal life as she lives in the worst district of the twelve and her and Gale are the ones that provide food for their family although they are a young age. It isn't predictable when her sister is called to be in the Hunger Games but it is predictable that Katniss will volunteer to take her place.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first four chapters I dislike the Capitol for being so cruel and unfair to the district people. I feel that Katniss is trying so hard to keep Prim, her mother and herself alive. I look down upon Katniss's mother for not being the one who takes responsibility of being in charge of the family and providing them with food. I find it very brave and strong of Katniss to do so much for her family. I could never be like Katniss if I lost my father and knew that I was the one who had to take care of my family.I look up to Katniss for being so independent and strong, and I wish to be more like her.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading the first four chapters. I believe that Katniss will be a great contestant in the Hunger Games because she has hunted for food. Also she has a lot of courage by hunting for her families survival. I believe that Katniss is very intelligent because over the time she has to take care of her family by herself, she has figured out which plants to take and which plants not to. Her intelligence will allow her to decide who she should take out first and who to leave last. I think Katniss doesn't trust people. This may help her because she cant have close relationships with people and allows her to kill them easier without having to think to spare them. She shows this by not getting in friendship with Peeta and by throwing out the cookies that Peeta's father gave Katniss.
ReplyDeleteWhen I read about Haymitch I feel sorry for him for many reasons. I comprehend why Haymitch is always drunk. I believe he is drunk because he has depression and that is how he gets away from life. I believe the depression is caused by how his district is so poor and has food. I think that Haymitch may also get drunk so that he can stay away from the memories of when he was in the Hunger Games. I can see why at first Haymitch did not want to help Katniss and Peeta; he proably thought that his district yet again had no hope to win the Hunger Games. I believe when Katniss and Peeta started attacking Haymitch, he relized that his district may win, and he started to regain hope.
ReplyDeleteDuring the reaping day, the day that two children from each district get chosen to participate in the Hunger Games, Prim, Katniss's sister was chosen to be in the hunger Games. When I first read the book, I thought for sure that the author would tell that Katniss was chosen, because she was the main character in the story. By writing this, the author would have been giving away a part of the story when she first told of the reaping day in the beginning of the story. I like that the author built up suspense by choosing Prim, and then making Katniss volunteer. It did not give away an important part of the story at the biginning of the book by doing this.
ReplyDeleteWhile discussing the upcoming games, Gale says that there should be wood in the arena, since the year that the contestants froze to death wasn't very exciting to the Capitol viewers. It seems cruel to me to say this about the excitement of the killing of people, especially children. If I were a citizen of the Capitol I am sure I would feel differently and I would want the games to be exciting for my enjoyment, but since I am a reader, I do not think it is kind to make a game of killing.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first four chapters of this book, I found that Katniss has an extremely strong and carring soul. After her dad died in the mining accident, Katniss not only had to deal with the emotions of her dad's death, but also take care of her sister and mother. Katniss was very disappointed with the actions that her mother took. Her mother basically abandon Katniss and Prim, leaving Katniss with the weight of the world on her shoulders. Katniss is also very strong because she took the place of Prim in the reaping, which was a very strong and quick decision by Katniss.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hope's comment. I was very surprised with how the author chose Prim. When reading the chapter, I thought that Katniss was going to get chosen, but I like how the author made it interesting by choosing Prim first and have Katniss volunteer. It makes the chapter less guessable. I hope there is another twist later in the book!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started reading the first chapter I felt very confused. As I started reading more and more, the book seemed to unfold itself and make me see the concept more clearly. Katniss is a sixteen-year-old girl that goes to the woods with her friend Gale. The woods are probably the only place in the states that make her feel happy. Gale looks exactly like Katniss. He has long black hair, olive skin, and gray eyes. They look so much alike; they could be mistaken as siblings. When Katniss met Gale in the woods in the first chapter, she smelt something so delicious and mouth watering wondering what it could possibly be. To Katniss’s surprise, Gale had traded a squirrel for a large, fresh loaf of bread at the bakery. As I was reading the first chapter I was getting slightly confused. I was asking myself questions like, “Why are they trading squirrels for loaves of bread?” or, “What is a district ?” and also, “What are the hunger games?” As I read on, everything became a little clearer. The hunger games are a battle between the districts. In punishment for uprising, each of the twelve districts gives one male and one female called tributes to participate in the game. There are a total of twenty-four tributes who are imprisoned in an out door arena. The arena could be any climate; from a frozen tundra to a scorching hot desert. The tributes must survive and fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins. This book is getting exciting!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dayne's comment about Katniss's personality. Katniss was caring and strong. She was not afraid of much. Her sister was the reason she built up the courage to go out into the woods everyday and put dinner on the table. This is a very hard thing for even a grown adult to do. People today don't have to go out and hunt to put the main source of food on the table every single day! We just go out to the grocery store! Katniss had a lot to do while she tried to take good care of her sister and her mother. Even though her mother practically abandoned the two children, Katniss fought through, and she was determined to keep her family alive because of her love for them. This shows (to me), as Dayne said, Katniss is a kind, caring person who has a lot of weight on her shoulders, but she pushes through to make everything better for her family. :)
ReplyDeleteThe first four chapters were very interesting and i have enjoyed the book so far. I think Katniss has a hard life because she has to keep her mom and younger sister safe. I think Katniss is very caring and I am inspired by that. I believe this because she spends most of her life finding ways to keep her whole family alive. I think it makes it even harder for Katniss to take care of her family because her dad died. I believe that Katniss does a great job hunting for food ,and selling what she catches for money or other goods. I think Katniss, her sister Prim, and mother have a hard time living because they live in a poor district, and they do not have hot water, alot of food, or nice clothes. If I was in that situation it would be hard for me.
ReplyDeleteI think Katniss is a very nice and respectful friend to Gale. I believe that they have a friendly relationship together. I think this because they both help eachother hunt and get food or other goods to keep their families alive. Gale and Katniss are both good hunters and do a good job helping eachother, but if a time comes and they do not have eachother i think they could do a hard task by themsleves. I think that they do not rely on eachother all the time. When I read about the Capitol I did not like what they were doing to the Districts. I do not agree with the Capitol at all because I think they are rude people. I believe this because they are so cruel to the district citizens.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that Katniss is a trustful and good friend to Gale. I believe that in the beginning Katniss and Gale became friends not because they wanted to but because they had to. They had to be friends to survive and to keep their families alive. I also believe that as there trust grew deeper in each other their friendship grew deeper. They hunted together, they fished together. They became better hunters when they helped each other learn different ways to capture animals. Katniss or Gale would not be the hunters they are today if they had not met each other. But the longer they were friends, the more they talked about what they had in common, which was a lot. They both had families who can't care for themselves because their fathers were killed in a mine explosion. So to put food on the table they have to go hunt for food illegally. So because of this similarity they are friends who understand what each other is thinking.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed the first four chapters and i want to keep reading the book to find out what happens to Katniss and Petta during the games. Reading this book makes me sort of sad and makes me realize what a great life i have and what a great place we live in. Katniss lives a very hard life. She is the one who has to provide for her family and take care of her sister. In these chapters i already know that Katniss is brave for many reasons. one reason i think this is because she goes and hunts to provide for her family and risk getting caught and she also takes the place of her sister when she is called to be a contestant of the games. The part where she volunteers to take primes spot makes me feel selfish because i don't think i would do that is my sister got picked to be a contestant in the games.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Hannah and Laura, that Katniss is very respectful to Gale. They Probably wouldn't have survived without each other. Like Laura said they helped each other. They helped each other by practice and making agreements to provide for their family. They also helped each other out by making the agreement that is Katniss was chosen to go to the games Gale would still hunt and help provide for her family. Their Friendship is full of trust. They trust each other to help one another survive and they help each other provide food for themselves and their familys. They are both really good hunters, and they make a great team.
ReplyDeleteWow I'm late.
ReplyDeleteMy firt impression of this book was a much different than what te book is about. I actually had no idea as to what it oould be about, nor did I expect the setting to be in some post-appocolyptic United States. I do have to agree with Katniss about her feelings toward Peeta, thinking that he was just being freindly to get inside of her and gain her trust. Gotta watch those goody two shoes. :)
I like how the story takes place in a post-apocolyptic USA. It adds much more to the story. The war between the Districts and the Capitol is also very interesting. just wished it would say which year the story took place in, so I could understand a little better. It is pretty sad, though, how Katniss's dad died by a land mine. I also thought it was pretty interesting how the Capitol made jaybirds in order to listen to the Rebels' conversations.
ReplyDeleteI think that Katniss is very brave and lives the life of an outcast. I think that her only goal in life is to live and make sure that her family lives. I strongly dislike her mother becuase she is spineless and weak. What kind of mother lets her child take care of the family, and it doesn't make it any better that Katniss is a girl. In a way i think that the fact that Katniss' mother was not able to take care of her and her sister it will drive her to victory in the hunger games. I empithize for Katniss becaus she must kill Peeta. Peeta was her seed to hope and her jumpstart to life without as much stress. all in all i like where this book is going.
ReplyDeletei agree that gale and katniss have a thing for eachother but they think tha it will effect how the do things in life.
ReplyDeleteThe first four chapters were interesting because of there lifestyle but really good.I think Katniss has a difficult life by having to have so many responsibilities and having to keep her sister and mother safe. I think she is brave by being so positive all the time, hunting for her family, and keeping her family alive. She probably must feel alot of sadness because of her fathers death and must have more responsibilities. I believe Katniss does a great job by taking care of her family. I think Katniss, Prim which is her younger sister, and her mother have a harder time because they live in a poor district. They have to work much harder for their food which must be difficult. I think Gale and katniss have a great friendship and they can rely on eachother for help. If I was in their situation it would be difficult for me.
ReplyDeleteThe first four chapters of this book made me feel very lucky to to have a good well balanced life. Reading about a family who is starving in a post-apocalyptic community made me feel very thankful for everything in my life. The story shows that katniss cares for her family very well. She takes time out of every day to get food for her mother and sister, and that shows a strong family bond between katniss and her mother and sister. I also thought that it was very heroic for katniss to take her sisters place in the hunger games, thinking that someone like her would not last in such a cruel environment.
ReplyDeletei think its a nice thing to give the contestants a little luxury before they they enter such a cruel environment. Why cant they take two adults from every district instead? It seems sort of cruel to watch children fight to the death. If they have to do the hunger games the least they could do is make adults or maybe criminals do it instead of children who have their whole lives ahead of them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Harrison, I don't understand why they make the children fight in the games. They haven't done anything wrong to deserve that punishment. Especially the younger children they are still discovering there district and what it is like. I think people who have done things wrong in their districts deserve to be in the hunger games or the adults because they have at least lived most of their lives.
ReplyDeletei disagree with harrison because if you give the contestants luxury before they enter the games it just makes it harder for them to get used to rationing food. for the second part they should let adults or at least adults and children
ReplyDeleteat the beginning of the book katniss's backround is hunting so i remember that because that might be a big part of the whole big. when katniss and gale talk about the reaping i know it sounds bad. i feel bad for the children who have to participate in the games. some have to put their name in the reaping more than once for tessera.
ReplyDeleteI dissagree with Harrasion because If you are given the luxery of an abundance of food and brand new clothes, it's kind of hard to let go of that when you go out into the hunger games. It would be especially hard because if you were used to having fresh, clean clothes given to you and all the food you could eat and all of the sudden you loose all of that, it would be ruff.
ReplyDeleteI was confused in the first chapter because I had no idea what they were talking about. I thought reapings meant a funeral. Then in the second chapter I started to understand it more. I n a way I can compare this to "The Giver",because it was the "perfect country" in a way. They have standards for everything.
ReplyDeleteIn chapters one through four Katniss tells us how her life is and the hardships of district twelve. Our daily lives are filled with fortune, more fortune then Katniss could ever dream of. Our closets stuffed with clothes, dresses, blouses, t- shirts, shorts, and many more. Katniss tell us how our life would be a fantasy compared to hers. She has to fight to survive. She was forced to grow up and mature without given a choice. Day by day Katniss goes to school, learns, and hunts. An average American child would go to school play on their computer, do a sport, and sleep with their stomachs aching with food every day and night. I think Katniss is very scared for her family but also for herself. I believe she needs to focus more on herself and how to survive and keep telling herself everything is going to be alright. I believe Katniss is unsure about anyone and trying as hard as she can to keep her focus on the games so that Peeta cannot get inside her head. I believe she is a strong girl and will make it far with her hunting skills. I agree with Harisson on his comment that it would be nice to have so much luxury before the games. To me that would be one thing that could help me stay alive. To know that their are riches in the world that I could get for my family would make me want to fight hard so that my family could feel the same way I did. I also believe thay should be able to experience that feeling in their life before they may die.
ReplyDeletesame post but showing where my next post would start...

I have just finished the book, writing down my blog comments as I went. I liked the first chapter and can see how the author explains most of the things you need to know about the book before the main conflict starts. I found it odd that Katniss could sell her skins and meat to the very people that enforce the laws against poaching outside of the district such as the mayor and peacekeepers. I also found it odd how usually no family members volunteer to go into the Hunger Games so their family members do not. I also find the concept of the Hunger Games horrible, how people must watch the slaying of children every year and how people in the capitol enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the rebellion they speak of took place. I assume this land they are on is the United States as it mentions District 12 being in Appalachia. It says they blew up District 13 as they most likely led the rebellion. I also wonder what the Capitol did to cause the rebellion, and why it is in the middle of the country instead of Washington D.C.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was very caring of Katniss to volunteer to go into the hunger games instead of Prim. That makes me wonder if Katness had ever done anything nice for Prim or this was her first time. I don't think katniss knows what she is going up against.
