Ch 13-17

  1. At the beginning of the chapters the gamemakers created a fire to bring the tributes together. It is ironic that Katniss, the girl on fire, is chased down by flames. Then when the Careers arrive she scales a tree in order to save herself. She gains confidence, inspite of her injured state, and taunts her enemies. For Katniss, I do not believe that the Games have really begun. So far, she has only run and hid from conflict. She has not a had a plan and has been only focased on finding food, water, and uncovering Peeta's true intensions. When both of the Career's attempts to reach Katniss fail, it is Peeta who suggests sleep and to formulate a new plan. I believe that he was attempting to give Katniss time to form a plan and escape. Then, for the second time in the book, the small girl named Rue appears. Silently she warns Katniss of the dangerous Trackerjacker nest above her. This is yet another complication in Katniss's quest for survival. In her entire time in the Games, it seems like Katniss has expirenced no good. I know that it were me instead of her in the arena, I could not find a way to escape from the tree. In fact I would most likely already be dead. Well against all odds Katniss does find a way to escape. During the anthem she begins to saw off the limb that the nest is on.At dawn she makes the final cuts and drops the nest on the Careers and Peeta. She goes to retrieve the bows and arrows from Glimmer when Peeta runs back to the area. Katniss has accepted that Peeta does not love her and that he has betrayed her as well. This however is not the case. Peeta does infact love her, and all of his actions have been motivated by the thought to protect her.He warns her to run and will most certainly have to face Cato as a consequence. This baffles Katniss but before she has time to question his actions, she blacks out. I believe that over time Katniss will learn that Peeta has not betrayed her and has not been playing the Lover-boy angle. She will learn that he truely does love her.

The next major development in the story is when Katniss and Rue become allies. Rue is by far my favorite character in the whole story. She is obviously clever, tough, and in her own sence, strong. She has kept herself alive by eating roots but obviously has been lacking protien in her diet. She and Katniss make some sort of exchange. Katniss givs Rue meat and in exchange, Rue heals Katniss's stings. This is important (to me) becuase it shows that Rue and Katniss understand each other. Unlike Peeta, Rue understands the need to be debt free. Katniss says that Rue reminds her of Prim but I prefer Rue to Prim because she is less delicate. She also thinks that Haymitch will be angry that she teams up with Rue but I dont think Haymitch will be mad. I think he recognizes how clever Rue is. Then for the first time, things begin to look up for Katniss. She also plans to destroy the Career's food, a move that will increase her chances of winning. I thought the plan was brilliant. I am coming to admire Katniss for her brains. It also makes her seem more similar to Haymitch than she did before.

At the end of the chapters the boy from District One throws a spear into Rue. My mind tells me that she cannot surive, but I hope she perserves. She has been through so much at her home and her family needs her. The thought that she will die is heart breaking.

  2. I thought that when the fireballs came raining down on Katniss, I immediately knew she was not going to die, but get seriously injured. She didn't get burned as badly as I thought, but still pretty badly. I thought that climbing up the tree to get away from the careers was a smart idea in terms of escaping without being noticed, but if she cracked a twig or fell, she could easily have been killed. I was very surprised when Katniss started talking to the careers down below her. Cato started climbing the tree to reach Katniss, and at that point I knew that Katniss was thinking very smartly right then. I thought that when Peeta suggested for the careers to sleep, it was a way for Katniss to escape, and Katniss realized it. I thought that she was extremely surprised to see Rue's face in the tree beside her. When Rue pointed up at the trackerjacker nest, I knew that Katniss was scared. I thought that her plan to drop the nest on the careers was very risky, but it could be smart. The second Katniss dropped the nest, I could tell she was trying to get out of their as quick as she could, but a few of the stings slowed her down. I knew that the second she saw Glimmer die with the bow in her hand, this was her chance to make a move. I thought that Katniss would just take the bow and run, but she Glimmers grip would not release the bow. When I read that Peeta came and told Katniss to run, I knew that Peeta was not trying to betray her, but protect her from Cato. I thought that Peeta risked his life to save Katniss, and this is when Katniss knows that he is not after her.

I thought Rue becoming allies with Katniss was a great idea. They are both smart in their own ways, and they can each provide food that leads to a healthy diet so they can stay alive. Rue has roots and leaves for stings, and Katniss has meat. Rue knowing where the career's food is gives Katniss an idea that I thought could change the result of the games. I thought that Rue lighting the fires could be very smart because it would lead the careers away from the food. The mines were a huge suprise to Katniss, and to me. I was expecting a clear path to the food, but Katniss was smart, and noticed the mines. When Katniss explodes the mines and then later starts looking for Rue, I thought Rue might be dead, but it didn't say a cannon fired. When she finally found Rue and then saw her get speared in the back, I knew that she was going to breakdown. And for the rest of that time, she did.

  3. Katniss and Rue are allies. They both have complete confidence in each other. this is odd because they know that if it came to it they would have to kill one another. for this reason i believe that when the boy from district 1 killed her she was somewhat grateful. this gratefulness obviously didn't change the direction of her arrow but i think that every time someone dies in the arena she gains more hope of winning.

  4. I just read 14 through 17 and I really think these were the best chapters. I really enjoyed chapters 15 and 16. The trapper jackers seem really scary, they seem as if it is all a plan, the gamemakers put them there just for action. I agree with Mathew, that everytime someone dies she gains hope. I think Katniss and Rue have a chance of winning, they each have confidence in eachother. Rue is obviously Katniss missing her sister, she obviously thinks as Rue as Prim. I think Rue is a huge advantage to Katniss, she knows alot about plants, since she is in district 11. I also wonder what is going to happen if they come down to the bottom two and have to kill eachother, that would be bad, I dont know what they would do.

  5. I knew right when the gamemakers started throwing fire at katniss that this was supposed to be completly ironic because she was the "girl on fire". I also knew she wasnt going to die.
When she climbed the tree to escape the careers i agree on the fact that the careers are bigger and cant climb as fast as she could but she could of fallen off the tree and killed herself or worse disturbed the Trackerjackets.
When Rue and Katniss became allies i knew that one of those two was probably gonna die, either in the end, where they have to fight each other, or die due to another cause.
When Katniss had blown up the career's camp i knew right then that she was most likely going to win the Hunger Games because if you can take out the stronger force's supplies you can beat them, for they will have less rations and weapons to fight you with.

  6. I agree with Mathew when he says that it is odd that Rue and Katniss are allies. They do not really seem like two people that would get along in the arena. If I was in the arena I would not have gotten as close to anyone as Katniss was with Rue. Rue reminded Katniss of her sister Prim. This only made it harder on Katniss when Rue was killed. Katniss really stuck it to the capitol when she put the flowers around Rue's body. I have a stong feeling that this act will play an important role later on in the story.

  7. I think Rue and Katniss will make an excellent team. Rue is really good with plants, we know that from the training sessions. Katniss could do the hunting . I think with them together, it wouldn't be so bad since both of them haven't really killed anyone. They make an excellent team. I felt really bad for Rue and for Katniss. When Rue is dying she must have been going through alot of pain, but with Katniss watching her ally die, she must have been really close to crying. I was so sad when she died, but I was glad that Katniss killed the boy who killed Rue.

  8. I do not think Katniss should have climbed the tree. It was not a good idea at all. The careers could have easily killed here even up there. They could have set fire to the bottom of the tree. The smoke would have killed her. They could have also cut the tree down. I am just saying the author could have portrayed a more realistic moment to keep in tune with how the reactions of the people in the book were all realistic.

  9. I can tell that Katniss has really opened up to Rue. She thinks of Rue as hs if she were her sister Prim. At the beginning of the story, I didn't exactly know who Katniss was, I could not get a feel for what type of emotions she had. I think this is because she blocked out her emotions. Because Katniss feels some sympathy towards Rue, I think Rue has given her a sense of being back at home and her emotions have come out. She may be thinking that Prim could be here instead of her and she would be just like Rue. I think the memories of home have given Katniss confidence and determination, and she has shown her true self while in the Arena with Rue.

  10. I think that Katniss paired up with Rue for two reasons. She was afraid and needed help to protect herself. Also because to Katniss Rue was like Prim. Rue is a small child and I think she reminds Katniss of Prim. I think when she is with Rue it gives her a sense of security and reminds her of home and of Prim where it is a lot more safe then in the games.

  11. I thought that Katniss and Rue had made great allies. I hate that Rue died but I am glad that Katniss is still alive and is now is closer to hopefully winning. I found it very sweet and caring when Katniss stayed with Rue and sung to her until she died. I have to disagree with Matthew and Morgan B. about how it was odd that Katniss and Rue became allies. I don't think it was odd at all because in the beginning Rue reminded Katniss of her sister, Prim, I think Katniss felt that she needed to be protective of Rue cause she was just as young as Prim. I feel bad for Katniss when she became angry at the Capitol for doing this to them because Katniss couldn't really do much to show the Capitol that they did not own them. If I were Katniss I probably would not have been able to walk away from Rue's body without trying to shoot a arrow at the people who came to retreave the bodies. I wish I could be like Katniss when she is able to control her emotions and not let them effect her actions.

  12. I think the time of Rue's death is the climax of the book. It means so many differnt things for Katniss. It was her first registered kill. At least it was the first time she intentionally killed someone. It was also the death of her biggest ally, Rue. Most importantly she learned she and Peeta could both survive.

  13. I a gree with Tyler. Katniis and Rue were joined by mutual need. They each needed someone to watch their back. However they became more than that. They became friends. Katniss was looked up upon by Rue. Rue reminded Katniss of Prim.

  14. I am commenting on Morgan R's post. I agree with you, Morgan. I am sad that Rue had to die, but I am also glad that two people are "out of the way" I feel bad about feeling this way, because this way I feel like I am one of the Capitol's citizens. I do not think it is weird that Rue and Katniss became allies, since Rue reminded Katniss of her sister, Prim. I enjoyed the way that Katniss decorated Rue's body with flowers, because in a small, quiet, but effective way, she rebelled against the Capitol. Katniss felt love for Rue, since she was like her younger sister, and I do think that Katniss felt like she had to protect her! I too, wish I could be like Katniss in a way, since she, without hurting anybody, rebelled against something that she knew was wrong, and stood up for what she believed in!

  15. When katniss killed Rue she ittentionally did it but she also knew that she had killed someone she could have relied on later in the hunger games. Then she realiezed that she would be able to survive with Peeta. The way Katniss was able to stay cool and collective after killing Rue surprised me because she "loved" rue.

  16. A Lot happened over these few chapters in the book. Katniss used other organism to do her dirty work for her. She cut a branch off of a tree that had a tracker jacker nest on it. It fell to the ground and the careers and some other tributes got stung. Katniss also got stung three times herself. The tracker jacker stings are very dangerous and sometimes fatal if stung enough. They also give you hallucinations. Katniss had hallucinations about all of her bad memories over and over again. By unleashing the tracker jackers, Katniss kills two tributes and finds the bow and arrows which one of the tributes had. Also when Katniss is still in the careers campsite, Peeta saves Katniss's life by keeping her away from the careers that were heading back to the campsite. I am still not sure what Peeta's plan is to do with Katniss.

Katniss forms an alliance with Rue in chapter 15. Katniss probably teams up with her because she needs someone to watch her back, let alone someone to trust. Katniss and Rue come up with a plan to kill the careers. Katniss is going to get rid of their food supply and see what happens. Katniss finds that she has to blow up the landmines that are lined around the place where their supplies are. Katniss uses her bow and arrow to cut a bug of apples that will fall and detonate the land mines. She busts the bag with three arrows and the apples fall and the land mines detonate.

  17. I agree with Matthew. I know that Katniss and Rue both had complete confidence and trust in each other. I am glad and i am sure Katniss is grateful that she didn't have to kill Rue if it came down to it. I am glad that Katniss killed the tribute from district 1 because i believe that gave her a lot of self esteem and confidence to win the Hunger Games

  18. I think Peeta and Katniss have become very close friends. Katniss went and got the bag of medicine to save Peeta's life. In doing so she risked her own. Peeta also saved Katniss's life. He stopped Cato from killing her. He also risked his own life in doing so. They may become more than friends.

  19. I like the idea of Katniss and Rue becoming allies. They are both in the same position in the games. They are on their own. Focusing on finding food and water, not bothering with the other tributes. But since they did become allies they made each other stronger and more confident in winning. Katniss feels more at home with Rue by her side. Rue is like Prim to her, so innocent and fragile. And for once in the games Katniss is not alone, fending for herself. She has a friend and when they go hunting for food Katniss sees Rue a little as Gale someone to confide in. Another individual that Katniss has come to trust.
In these games Katniss has made more friends than ever before. I believe that Katniss has become emotionally attached with herself. If the the Hunger Games had not come her way she would not have the strength that she has now.

  20. The idea of using the Tracker Jackers on the other tributes I thought was pretty smart. Although she got stung as well, it mellowed out some of the competition for a little bit, seeing as two of the tributes died and the others eventually hallucinated.
Why she didn't just leave the Cornubia (or however you spell it) is a little strange, but I guess it worked out in her advantage. Seeing as most of the good items were near the center, where most of the fighting would be, I guess she was lucky that the backpack was so close, but she lost the arrows.
Once she got the arrows, though, things became a lot easier for her, besides the giant wall of fire that eventually ran her away from her campsite and the pond. The severe burns that she got weren't as bad as I thought that they would be.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that it is a bit snobish of the Gamemakers thinking that the Hunger Games can get boring, because they can never since eventually someone will run into another tribute. I think the wall of fire was a little overkill.
The fireball did significantly less damage than I thought it would, seeing as it can reach up to 950 degrees. It might have just brushed up against her leg, or just off to the side, which still would hurt quit a bit.
When Rue and Katniss decided to be Allies, I was a bit surprised. There was only 1 other Alliance in the Games, and that was the Career pack, which would make sense. If they split up, then when one came across another, they would use up a lot of energy trying to kill one another, but together, almost impossible to kill.

  22. These chapters made me so excited! I couldn't put the book down! The tracker jackers sound like the scariest creatures!! I was so startled when Katniss saw eyes..small Rue! I can't believe that Rue helped Katniss. That surprised me, I thought that Rue was shy and didn't want anything to do with the other districts. I can't believe the damage. Every one is saying that it wasn't too much damage, but if you think about it, it was alot of damage! Katniss's wound sounded scary!

Also, when the gamemakers through the fire balls on Katniss it was funny yet odd, yes she was the girl on fire, but what about Peeta?

I can't believe that Katniss and Rue are now together! They have made an alliance! Now there is two alliance's in the games! I think that they will do very well together. Katniss has the supplies in her bag, and Rue has the knowledge on plants and herbs, and they both can kill! I'm looking forward to reading more..

  23. I think that chapters 13-17 were amazing. I never wanted to put the book down because so much was happening. Most of the events that happened did not help Katniss or the other contestensts.During the forest fire I thought Katniss wasn't going to survive because she was sleeping in a tree, and when she woke up there was smoke and flames all around her. I did not know if Katniss was going to be able to get down the tree fast enough. I felt so bad for her because of the heat. It must of been hard for her to run fast because the smoke was making it tough for her to breath. I thought it was ironic that they shot fire balls at Katniss because she was the girl on fire.
When Katniss was in the tree I thought the eyes she saw were some sort of animals eyes, but when she found out it was Rue I was shocked. I didn't think a small girl would be hiding high in a tree. When the tracker jackers were attacking Katniss I thought she was going to fall down the tree because they were stinging her alot. I believe that it was one of the scariest and toughest momments.

  24. Peeta...I love him in these 4 chapters! I was so glad that he saved Katniss's life, and that he cared about her enough to protect her. I could tell that Katniss was happy to see Peeta and hear his voice because I think she has always cared about him.
When Katniss and Rue become allys I was happy because I think they make a good team together. They can trust and depend on eachother throughout the rest of the Games. Rue has excellent statigies and she knows exceptional tricks for healing injuries because she fixed Katniss's stings. When Katniss hears the scream I thought it was a trick that the other contestents pulled on her. I thought they were trying to get Katniss over towards them so they could kill her. Then when Katniss saw Rue in a net with a spear in her body, I knew Katniss couldn't save her. This has been the saddest moment in the book for me, and I think for Katniss also. I can't wait to read more.

  25. When the flames start i laugh on the inside because she was the girl on fire, but back on the seriose note its raelly not funny becuase she is caught in the middle of a fire. When the Careers fell after they tried to climb up the tree and just stayed on the ground, i think that it was stupid on there part. it was crazy when Rue popped up out of nowhere and didn't kill Katniss but helped her take out the Careers. The Tracker Jackers were out of this world. They track you down and take you out! The hallucinations from the posion is a nice little touch to the horror of havind a knot the size of a plum and orange on your body. this book is nice.

  26. I also love Peeta in these four chapters. I was really happy that he saved Katniss' life. If Peeta didn't care about her he would have caught her and killed her but instead he let her go. I believe that they both care about each other. I thought Katniss was really smart about her idea with the tracker jackers nest. I think Katniss and Rue make a good team because they can depend on one another and its good for them both to have somebody to lean on in these four chapters. I thought in the beginning of the games Rue would have been killed quickly because she is so tiny and weak, but I was mistaken. Rue is a very strong willed girl. She is great about not getting caught and her statigies are really good in most all of situations she faced. When Katniss saw Rue with the spear in her, she must have felt heart broken and terrible about her idea to get supplies from the careers. I agree with Hannah and that it was the saddest part in the book so far.

    ReplyDelete
  27. These chapters were also very good and interesting. The whole book has been very good. Even though im pretty sure I know how its going to end, I still really want to finish reading to make sure. when Katniss drops the nest on the careers I was very happy and proud of Katniss. It helped get two people out of the way and off the careers. I wasn,t shocked when petta told Katniss to run. When this part happend at first I thought peeta was going to fight her and maybe even hurt her, I didn,t think he would let her get away and fight cato for her. I think Katniss and Peeta will end up being allies in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i dont think she should have stayed in the tree she should have waited until late at night to kill them. dropping the nest on them drove the carrers away so that was a good idea too. i knew peeta was going to come back to save katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  29. i wouldnt have trusted rue because its not that safe to trust someone not in your district. katniss shouldnt be mad at herself for not saving rue because what happened happened and she can't do anything about it

  30. I really enjoyed these chapters! I think that they were very vivid and detailed. I like how the gamemakers made a challenge for the contestants. I do no think that Katniss should have climbed the tree because it could have burned down. I believe that Katniss is a very brave person and that she handled the situation pretty well.

I am glad that Rue and Katniss are allies. I personally like Rue the best. She is sweet and she understands Katniss. I thought that it was really sad when she died.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I disagred Nick. I would totally trust Rue because Katniss and her formed a pretty strong alliance. Yet, I still do agree with Nick because you can not really trust anyone outside of your district. Also, I agree that Katniss should not be upset about what happened to Rue. She could not do anyting to stop fate and if she keeps on being upset, she is going to loose sight in what is important; STAYING ALIVE.

    ReplyDelete
  32. In chapters 13 through 17 Katniss finds herself trembling before small but furious balls of fire. She is scared and knows she must keep moving until one scrapes her thigh and that is it. Katniss agonizes in pain and even though it is is overshe knows she must escape the careers. As she slowly finds water this helps her wounds but she cannot stay there forever.
She then finds herself on misery as she huddles up into a tree. When she is awoken the little girl, Rue to warn her about the ferocious wasps that could kill her in the tree. That brings her attention; she knows the careers are right below her so she decided to chop the nest off and bringing it down killing some, and hurting several of them. She knows this was a risk and she was stung by three making her start to have hallucinations.
Though she does realize that Haymitch really is there for her after he gets her the cream. This is good since now Katniss has a little more faith in herself which I believe will help her go far.
After Katniss forms an alliance with Rue I believe she is better. Though she still second guesses herself about Peeta which is such a pity. I believe Peeta really does love her he betrayed the careers because his love for Katniss was showing too much and he knew it. Though Katniss was too stubborn to see it all she now is comforted as Rue and her make a great team. She comes up with new strategies and feels hope again as they eat together and get to know one another. Though hope fades as she loses some hearing in one ear and looks for Rue, waiting at the top of their tree. Eventually went she finds Rue, Rue is shot leaving her no chioice but to kill right away. I believe and hope more then ever that sweet little Rue will be alright and that the sponsors will come through.

  33. I loved these four chapters. I thought there were two very interesting parts in these four chapters. The first thing I thought was interesting in this chapter was when Peeta saved Katniss. He warned her about the Careers coming. The second thing I thought was interesting in this chapter was when Katniss and Rue became allies. I thought that was a very good idea for them to become allies. I also do agree with Anna and Nick that Katniss should not be mad about Rue being killed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. These four chapters were very suspenseful. I thought it was smart to cut the wasps nest to kill the enemies. I also thought it was smart to form an alliance with Rue for the time being so she could eat a better portion of food and have someone to talk to. I thought it was nice for Haymatch to send the medical supplies to Katniss. If she didn't get those supplies her calf would have probably slowed her down even more.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I disagree with grace that Katniss shouldn't be sad about Rues death. I do agree that it gives her an advantage of not having the awful task of killing her but that doesn't mean she shouldn't be sad. I also think that she should get more sponsors since she shot the boy from district 1, a lot of people will be betting on her. I thought it was a smart idea to blow up the supplies, but I wouldn't have used one of the arrows. If I was out there I would try and improvise and use something else because it would be bad if they found the arrow and knew that it was her.

  36. In these chapters Katniss is trying to survive a wildfire which the gamemakers created because they were bored. They author gives a really good description about the fire and about how she felt. I had to keep reading because it made me desperate to see what happens.

    ReplyDelete
  37. These also talk about Katniss and the great wasp nest situation. Peetaand his gang were gaining on her so the next mornging she dropped the wasp nest on them. In my opinion this was actually kind of funny even though the wasps kill one girl. When Katniss kept going she felt dizzy ,a guy was about to attack her but peeta pushed her out of the way.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Peeta and all of his plans end up helping katniss. she always has doubts about him, but she might have already died if peeta wasn't there. the same goes for peeta. this doesn't mean that Peeta or katniss couldn't survive some on their own because thy did.
