Feel free to post any questions you have about the book here. Your fellow classmates and I will answer them...also, feel free to answer any questions you see here, too! This section will remain for the entire book...

  1. I am kind of confused about Gale and Katniss. Why do they do all of the hunting? Why is it there job to clean, do chorus, watch the family, and provided for the family? They both have Mothers, there Mothers should help too!

  2. Abigail, Gale and Katniss do all of the hunting because they need to provide food for their family and because they can sell excess game for some money for products they might need around the house. They are both have to watch the families because they are poor families and they are very responsible. They can not afford to pay people to do the work for them and their family does not help. They are doing everything they can to stay alive, which is why the break the law and hunt and gather because they could not live just off of the grain. I think that Katniss' mother does not help because her husband died, and she is afraid of many things now. And also Prim is still pretty young so she isnt as responsible.

  3. I have to agree with Nate on this one. Katniss' mother cannot help because she has gone into a vegetated state. She is so upset about the loss of her husband that she feels that there is no hope left. Katniss ends up taking care of her mother and Prim because Prim is too young to provide food and because she knows her mother will not help. Katniss also signs up for tessera a great number of times so she can get grains and oil for cooking. By signing up for tessera her name got put into the reaping more. By hunting she also supports other familys. She sells them left over game for low prices.Basically her whole family depends on her hunting skills.

  4. I also agree with Nate and Morgan. In order to be a successful family you need food, water and money. Gale and Katniss have both had their families lose an important member that supplies some of the items I mentioned (food, water and money). After losing their fathers in the same accident they both have to fend for themselves, hunt for food and sell some food at the hob. Obviously they both have strength and weaknesses, Gale can do some things Katniss cannot do and Katniss can do somethings that Gale cannot do. I also think they are both very lonely. They have to take care of their families 24-7 and have not much time to have a friend, they each fit. To me, they are two puzzle pieces slowly fitting together.

  5. I am very confused about what happened to North America. I know that they described the Districts and Panem, but I'm curious about the rest of the world. Are there others living in North America? What about in all of the other countries?

    ReplyDelete
  6. I do not know anything about the other countries of the world. I know that the story takes place in the future so any number of things could have happend. I do wonder how far in the future it does take place though. I think that Katniss lives somewhere around the area of North Carolina. In the book it says that it snows and gets rather warm around district 12. I still would like to know what happend to the rest of the world.

  7. I am wondering that if Katniss and Rue are the last ones left if they will try to find a way to escape instead of killing eachother. Katniss thinks of Rue as a little sister and Rue thinks of Katniss as an older sister. I wonder if this will come into play. If not the struggle to feel nothing will hurt both of them.

  8. Maggie, I do not believe that the people of Panem and those living in the districts know there are others living in the world; they may even believe that North America is the entire world. I think that the districts are spread out and cover most of North America. Another answer could be that there is no one else in the world. Perhaps when Panem formed they obliterated all other human life. Panem may be the only comunity left in the world.

Abigail, I agree with Nate, Morgan, and Annie. Those in District Twelve have difficulty surviving. The Capital staves them to show their dominence over the districts. As you know, both Gale's and Katniss's fathers were killed in the mine. Katniss's mother gave up on living and Gale's mother is unable to care for her family. Women are not allowed to work in the mines so there is not a good way for a women from the Seam to earn money to support her children. Unlike Katniss's mother, Gale's mother has no knowledge in healing to start a business so she tries her best. Gale and Katniss however have not accepted death by starvation and realize they must take charrge of their families. Since they have no money to pay for goods and services they must hunt for food and do the services for themselves. Prim and Gale's siblings do not have the skills required for these tasks so the job falls on their shoulders. It is unfair but in their world it is the sad reality.

  9. Maggie, I was wondering the same thing. I think that there was some sort of nuclear war that went on throughout the world. I think that there are other countries and districts throughout the world, it just does not talk about them. Im sure there are more people North America, they have their own government and they are all spread out across the continent and nobody dares to try to travel to them. I think the same thing for the other countries.

  10. I wonder how the Games will end. Because Katniss is the narrator it is unlikely that she will die, but this seems to simple of an ending for the author. Also, I do not think that she will abandon Katniss's and Peeta's "romance" and it seems cruel for one of them to live and the other to die. How does everyone else think the Games will end?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I wonder if Peeta doesnt think Katniss is faking the romance tactic, becuase he did not say it was a plan to get sponsors or to get the gamemakers on his side. Then he told the story in the cave and they were true events that Katniss had not remembered untill he brought it up. Even if she wasnt faking would Gale be hurt or does he think of her as just a freind.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Camille, I think that Katniss and Peeta will be the winners of the hunger games. This sounds very predictable for this to happen but I think the audience will want the gamemakers to bring Katniss and Peeta together and have them win because they are supposedly in love. I know that Peeta is badly injured, and I think Katniss will be protecting Peeta while Katniss gets the kill to end the hunger games.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Robert, I believe that Peeta really does like Katniss but that he does not realize that She is faking. He must believe that she likes him since in the arena he has no one to compete with. I think Gale will be hurt but he does not broadcast his feelings so no one will notice. Both Peeta and Gale have feelings and Katniss is unsure what her feelings for both of them are. In the end, I think all three will get hurt.

  14. I am wondering if Gale will keep his promise of giving food to prim and her mother like he promised Katniss??? And If he doesn't what will prim and her mother end up doing???

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shane, I think that Gale will keep his promise to Prim and her mother. I think that Gale is a very trustworthy friend to Katniss and he would not let her down. Gale cares about her mother and Prim. If he didnt keep his promise, I think that Prim would take care of her mother. She would go out into the woods and attempt to hunt so that they wouldn't starve. It would be very hard for Prim, but she would try.

  16. In the middle of the games Katniss sees Peeta with other tributes and seems to be on their side. Katniss thinks this was Peetas initial plan, but as the book goes on she sees it was not the plan after he let Katniss go free. I wondered if this was his plan to betray her and then he got scared, or if he only wanted to fool the tributes?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Tyler, I think Peeta's plan was to only fool the tributes. I think that Peeta thought that he would have a better chance at staying alive if he would team up with the careers. I think that was his plan for the games.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't understand Katniss' hostility towardes Peeta. Is it because that he announced his love for her on tv, or is it something else?

    ReplyDelete
  19. When Rue is dying, and Katniss is singing her to sleep, where did Katniss learn the song? Did she learn it from her mom?

    ReplyDelete
  20. When Peeta and Katniss kiss, is that just for the crowd, or do they actually have feeling for each other?

    ReplyDelete
  21. This is an answer to my own question. I just thought the question through, and i think that Katniss learned the song from her mother.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Camille, I believe that the Hunger Games will end by Peeta and Kitniss being the last two alive causing them to have to try and kill each other. But I think that Peeta will kill himself in order for Kitniss to live because he seems to really like and care for Kitniss in the beginning of the book. I hope that Kitniss and Peeta survive the Hunger Games because I really like them.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tyler, I think that Peeta was trying to protect Katniss from the beginning. She got a very high score when she showed the gamemakers her archery skills. This means that she would bea main target of the other players. I think that Peeta was trying to protect Katniss by leading the Careers away from her. I think that he really does like her, so why would he betray her? He was also probably trying to avoid her. If it got down to a fight between the careers and Katniss, Peeta would most likely be expected tot kill her. He was trying to avoid her so that he would not have to kill her. I do not think that he was ever planning to betray her.

  24. I have one question. Why did the gamemakers allow there to be two victors? Were Katniss and Peeta fan favorites? I do not think that the people at the capitol would be very happy if the " starcrossed lovers" were seperated. I do not think that there have ever been two victors in the history of the games. Why would they change the rules now? What was going through the gamemakers heads when it came down to Katniss and Peeta. Will they be punished for changing the rules of the games?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Cammile, although I finished the book I had the same thoughts as you. Because the way the book is set up you find it unlikely that Katniss will do good in the game with no troubles. I thought that the romance tactic would not work though because it seemed pretty strange to me how that would work.

  26. I am wondering weather or not Peeta meant to give Katniss the bread in the flashback or weather it was a Coincidence? I at first thought it was a coincidence, but now I dont know because Peeta seems to like Katniss quite a bit. Peeta also seems like the type of person that would try to help someone.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To answer your question I personably believe Gale will help Prim and her mother because Katniss is good friends with Gale and good friends keep their promises. To that second part of the question I personably believe that Prim and her mother would starve to death because I don't believe Prim can hunt and get food. Also Prim's mother also has no motivation in her to go get food.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Morgan, I think the reason they changed the rule to their being two victors was because I think they might have wanted Peeta and Katniss both to believe that if they both made it to the end that they would be fine. Then when it was them just left they changed the rule to make the game more interesting and see how they would both react to the second rule changing.

  29. I am commenting on what Maggie asked about North America. Maggie, I think that is what the author wants you to wonder. What would be a good story without a mystery, something you have to find out yourself. That builds suspense and thought in the book. That suspense leaves the reader wanting more. My peronal opinion of what happened was that North America was destroyed by natural events and wars that caused the human race to move to a central part of the continent and become secluded, living in their own world with their own laws, where the people are taught one thing to keep them away from the real outside world. I think the Capitol knew that if the people knew about the outside world, they would rebel, and the Capitol's power would be taken. That is my thought, but I don't exactly know if this is the real thing that happened to North America! I hope that answered your question!

  30. At the end of chapter 8, I'm wondering why Peeta wants to practice separately? I clearly can see that her has a crush on Katniss. I still can not comprehend why he doesn't want to work with her though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Maggie, I agree with Nate. I think that some sort of nuclear warhead wiped out the rest of the world. Although I'm not quite sure why everything hasn't been obliterated to pieces, unless the warheads were detonated in the air causing nuclear rain to fall. That would kill anyone who drank the water and would spread radiation poisoning around. Killing all the people that got it.

  32. Did anybody else think that the description of the Capitol could be a description of the United States as a whole and the other districts represented other countries or Continents in the world? Could The United States be viewed as "The Capitol" of the world?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hope- I did not think of it that way but it would explain how they are describing it as the leader or like ruling place in the world. The only thing that confuses me is what the districts would represent? The districts could not represent continents or countries if the capitol was the United states becuase they have to be of lesser value.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hope I think this could be a way of describing other countries or continents. I think this because America is one of the wealthiest countries, and we are often viewed as having more than enough or taking more than we need. In the book when they are in the Capitol they eat fancy foods like it is no big deal like we some times do. I don't think that districts represent other countries as an exact country but more of an idea as a poor country or rich country.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I was wondering if anybody else thought that way. The United States sometimes is viewed by other countries similar to how the reader may view the Capitol. In order to get support or aid from us, other countries sometimes have to do what we want and act how we want them to act just like Gamemakers and districts.

  36. I was wondering weather or not Peeta actually was serious about joining the career tributes. I thought he may of just wanted to team up with them and then while they are not looking kill them, but I'm not sure if I'm right or not.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I personally do not believe that it represents the United States. One reason I say this is because we do not rule over other countries. Also the capitol is rich and the United States is in Trillions of dollars in debt. I personally believe this is a statement on communism because the capitol takes all it wants and needs from the districts. Also the people of the districts have no say in what the laws the capitol makes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Even though the United States is in debt, it does not mean that our citizens live like they are. We do have ipods and any food we want, plastic surgery, fancy clothes and all of the luxuries that make us take for granted what we have, just like the Capitol. Many countries do not have these luxuries, and they live off of the bare necessities of life, just like the Districts. Also, communism is not the government taking what they need from the country, although that was what was happening in the book, and I noticed that as well. Communism can be defined as the community as a whole owning everything and not one class over another. Everybody, and every social class is treated equally in communism, while in the story, many of the districts were treated as less than others. Mainly, the Capitol was the largest class, and in communism, there is no largest social class. Sorry to disagree with you Daniel.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hope, I don't think that the Capitol represents the United States either. Like Daniel said, we do not rule over other countries. It is not our fault that other countries are suffering from poverty. There are charities in America that help those countries. And yes, we do have ipods and other luxeries, but we have to work for them. We are not with holding any necessities from other countries. Just because we have things others don't does not mean we should just give them things for free. For example, if you studied really hard for a test and got a 100 and someone else did not study and they failed, should you give them some of your points so that they pass and you suffer? The people in the districts work hard and are not paid a fair amount. The Capitol does no work at all. This is not the case in the world today. I'm not saying you are wrong I am just disagreeing with you.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Daniel I agree with you about Peeta joining the career tributes. I think that one reason he joined them was to lead them away from Katniss. I also agree that Peeta was eventually going to try and kill them one by one. I thought that the tributes were going to kill Peeta very soon. When Katniss found him I was pretty sure that he was close to dead.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Lauren I think that when Peeta and Katniss kissed, it was because they are in love. I think that it was not because they were on television. I think that when they kissed, Katniss really believed that she loves Peeta. Even though it amused the audiance to see Katniss and Peeta kiss, I think that it was all real, not for "publicity."

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't understand why they have to use children. Why use children in a fight to the death instead of an adult? I think it would be better to use an adult from two families in each district instead of children who have their whole lives ahead of them.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Harrison, I think that is why they take the children. They want to punish the adults so that they will never revolt. The best way to punish the adults is to take their children.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't understand why people are not sopposed to leave their district.Wouldn't the people want to see what the other districts are like?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why didn’t the other career tributes die like the other girls that died from the bee stings?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I’m wondering why Peter didn’t try to find a better place to hind because I think that there would be a lot of bacteria in and on the mud that he catalogued himself with?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I’m wondering weather or not Peeta will ever become a friend to Katniss after what she did to him at the end of the chapter?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Grace they do want to see the other districts. This is another way the capitol the people that the capitol still has power over its people though. Also the capitol is afraid of another up rise. I think if people had the right to travel to district to district I think they would start to become conspirators. I think the capitol was smart to of done this. I also think it's cruel to keep the districts caged up, but that's is what they want you to think of them because that is what they are.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Harrison, the adults do not have the strength and speed that young people have. Also it makes it more interesting for the capitol because they are cruel and so is making children kill each other. The adults also have to sleep more, and it is not fun watching someone sleep. One last thing there are an abundance of children, but probably not as many adults. I say this because a lot of the adults die in the coal mine.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Morgan, I don't think both Katniss and Peeta both fan favorites. I think the fans will be upset about either one of them trying kill one another. Also I think Katniss and Peeta would have chosen to kill themselves instead of killing one another. I think the capitol realized this and knew it was going to be a boring ending the games

    ReplyDelete
  51. Why do the contestants have to have stylist's when they get off the train to the Capitol? Why can't they keep their usual clothes on intead of getting costumes?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Daniel, I think that Peeta did not care if there were bacteria in the mud. I think that he just wanted to hide from the other tributes. Since he was easily camoflauged there i think that he just took the chance to hide.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Daniel this is off of harrisons question. But even though the adults do not have the same strength why but a 13 year old in a fight for a more than likely chance to die when you could put adults?

    ReplyDelete
  54. In chapter 12, Why did Peeta join a group that wanted to find and kill Katniss?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Grace I think Peeta joined that group to survive, and was probably going to try to kill them. But I don't think that he was going to help them kill Katniss.

    ReplyDelete
  56. grace, he joins the group because he wants to lead them away and protect katniss

  57. Mrs. Breton, as you can see I am a bit of a procrastinator and I am reading at the last minute, thought I am a bit confused about blogging, on my blog as well. I was wandering is what I have been writing on both blogs okay since I only have one post but several discussions? Do I need to have two separate posts or just at least two views in a post? Please reply hastily, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Karina..I traditionally ask for two seperate posts..I will say, however, that your posts are very well written and a very deep analysis. If you have two views in one post, please label that at the end of the post so I know to count that as two. Just make sure it is a very defined difference and lengthy. You are doing a great job!

  59. I'm wondering what's going to happen in the end. I think that Peeta and Katniss will be the last ones and Peeta takes his own life so Katniss can survive.

    ReplyDelete
  60. To Daniel> I think the careers didn't die because they didn't get many stings as the girls

  61. When Katniss killed the boy from district 1 I think that rose a lot of attention in the audience. Sinse she killed one of the strongest players in one blow, I think a lot of people are going to bet on her.
