the story is written in first person. this is key. knowing only what katniss knows makes the story unravel in a way that leaves certain parts of the story questionable. in fact if the story was written in 3rd person i think it could have been at least 1,000 pages. that doesn't mean that it would have been any better. katniss's situation is perfect for a story. there were 73 hunger games before her that makes for 73 3rd person stories or many more 1rst person. A first person story that focussed not around katniss would have been very dull. the author could have writtnen about the hunger games where everyone died of cold and starvation, but that would be boring. the author wrote about the exciting story that belonged to katniss because she knew that it was the best story she could write about the hunger games.
ReplyDeletei am sounding just like the inhabitants of the Capitol. Anyone who likes this book for all of the action and violence (which i do) is in a way just like the Capitol people
When I first finished the book I was thrilled at the book's plot and the exciting twists in the Games. In a way I was almost sad the Games were over because that ment the excitement would come to an end. I then realized that I was acting just like those in the Capital. I think that all of us can identify with the Capital's citizens because their lives are similar to our's. I think that Katniss's life is the hardest to relate to due to the lack of similarity. True, we may posess some of Katniss's qualities, but we have never had need of them in the way Katniss does. I try to imagine myself as a character in the book, but the only position I can picture myself in is as a citizen of the Capital. I'm sure I could adapt to life in the districts but life in the Capital would most certianly be the easiest.
ReplyDeleteI also have thought about what Gale said at the beginning of the book. He and Katniss were in the woods and Gale talked about how the capital was trying to make the people in the districts hate each other. Then, later in the book Katniss metions how the districts know very little about each other. I think that rebellion is a very real threat to the Capitol. They are separating the people so that they cannot band together and rise against the Capitol. They have with held basic human rights from the people and eventually the people of Panem will fight back against the cruelty.
This is a captivating tale about a girl who lives a hard life in a cruel country. Like Matthew said, Telling the story from Katniss's perspective is perfect. It provides an interesting plot to keep the reader interested and has great characters. You could see it as merely a story ment to entertian. In my mind, the book is both entertaining and teaches a lesson. The book could be interpreted as a book about the importance of freedom and human rights. It places stress on how we must be humane to one another and not treat each other like animals. We must treat each other as equils or our society will crumble.
This is now one of my favorite books. When i finished the book I was and still hungry for more. The ending left just the right amount of questions for you to want to keep reading, but not too many as to make you think the next book will just be answers and know plot. The Hunger Games is now my favorite book. I am also thankful i got to read such a thrilling and compelling book for summer reading not a dull boring book like you almost always have to read.
ReplyDeleteWHAT A GREAT BOOK!!! I loved this book, but the ending was not very satisfying for me. I had so many questions..did Peeta ever forgive Katniss? What happened with Katniss and Gale? Did Katniss choose Gale or Peeta..and did Katniss even choose one of them? Were they all friends. These are just some of the questions that are in my head. I think that each character was very important in the story, but I agree with Camille that Katniss telling the story was perfect, it was very meaningful as she told it! I am so sad i finished it...when i got down to the last 5 chapters i COULD NOT stop!! I love when books are like that (:
ReplyDeleteI thought overall this was a great book. It was very predictable that Katniss and Peeta would be the last 2 surviving, but it was still very exciting. When it said that Peeta felt bad about killing foxface in the book, I didn't understand that because he was fine with killing the other girl in the beginning of the hunger games. I am hoping to read the second book because I had so many questions at the end of this one.
ReplyDeleteI loved this book over all. I finnished it in three days. I actually finnised it on the last day of school. I found the way the author ended the book frustrating. I felt like i had to know more. I read the second book Catching Fire in three days also. I felt like there was suspense throughout the book. From the moment I began reading, I could not put the book down. I did notice that the author wrote the book in first person present. The Hunger Games is one of the first requiredsummer reading books that I have actually enjoyed. It was never one of those required reading books that you read last; not because you want it fresh in you mind , but because you did not want to read it. I loved reading the Hunger Games from cover to cover.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite books! I can't wait to read the sequal. I am glad that both of them won, but I don't understand why Peeta felt bad about killing Foxface. It was either him or her, either one of them had to die. I had already read this book but it was definatley better reading a second time, it answered alot of the question I had about that book.
ReplyDeleteI loved this book so much! It was really good and I can't wait to begin the sequal to it!But, I didn't like how the author ended the book without having Katniss decide who she loved. I hope Katniss will make up her mind about who she loves in the second book and pick Peeta because he seems to really love her.
ReplyDeleteI was upset with the ending. I did not want it to be that way between Katniss and Peeta. It seemed as though they would never be friends again. I did not like how Peeta only took her hand because he had to, and I felt like something was wrong when Peeta said it was for the audience. When I first read the book, one of the last things Katniss said shocked me. She said, "Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me." The ending was cold, but it left suspense for the next book. Thank you, Mrs. Breton, for choosing this book, so that I could read it again before the third book comes out!
ReplyDeleteIn the end when Katniss and Peeta are the last left and the change in rules is announced I did not think they would do what they did. I expected Peeta to kill himself because he was already badly injurned and there was no way of knowing that their plan would actually work and left them both win. But, their plan worked and I thought the book was very good with an interesting plot.
ReplyDeleteThis rivals Charlotte's Web for my favorite book because of its amazing detail and great idea for a book overall. I agree with Nate that it was obvious that Katniss and Peeta would win, but it was amazing how they became victors after all of what happened at the games. I will read the second book and hopefully find out more of Katniss's life at home and who she loves(if she does.)
ReplyDeletelooking back on the book it is not one of my favorites. it didnt spend enough time on the good parts of it. too much of the book was on the pre-game. i wish that it started in the games and she could have been thinking about what happened before, that would give the reader information. even if this made the book shorter i would have liked it more.
ReplyDeleteThis ending kills me! I must read the next book! The ending is so upsetting to me! I don't unerstand at all about the whole Peeta and Katniss in a relationship. Peeta thinks that Katniss never really loved him, but she did!
ReplyDeleteI think that the beginning of the book was boring. It was all about "getting ready for the games." I didn't think the book was that great until the real games begun. I think that the book would have been more interesting if the book started in the games, and Katniss talks or thinks about the preparation of the games.
When I found out that there was a second book I predicted that Katniss and Peeta would win, unless there was a new main character to the next book. Suzanna Collins made it so suspenceful! When Katniss and Peeta almost ate the bad berries I thought that they were going to die!
I think that Suzanne Collins is a brilliant writer! Her plot was interesting, and the suspence she created literally made me read Part 2 in 2 hours. I'm so sad the book has finished.
Mrs. Breton-I loved the blog! It was so much easier then writing a report or making a diarama. I read my first book that I chose before the hunger games, and now thinking about it I wish I would have made a blog instead of a journal!
I really liked this book! I agree that the ending really left me hanging. I was dissapointed that Katniss and Peeta did not have a good relationship in the end. I cannot wait to read the second book because I would love to know what happens to Katniss and Peeta in District 12. In my opinion, the ending was confusing. I think that there should have at least been something about Katniss going home and seeing Prim, her mother, and Gale.
ReplyDeleteDuring the book, I was expecting someone to tell Katniss some kind of bad news. Something along the lines of maybe her mother and Prim getting sick, or something else terrible. I was very relieved when that did not happen.
Abigail I agree with you! I think that the blog is so much easier than doing a project. I wish that our other teachers could have done this instead.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to read the sequel, Catching Fire. The Hunger Games is now one of my favorite books. I think this is a great book to read for summer reading, and I recomend that you keep it for next year! I did not like how the author ended the book. I wish Katniss could have chosen who she loved. I wish Katniss would have worked things out with Peeta. I agree with Maggie, I think blogging is easier than doing projects.
ReplyDeleteThe Hunger games was one of the best summer reading books I have ever read. I really want to read the sequal. I want to see what happens between Katniss and Petta. I really liked the blogging. It was easier than book reports and projects. The end of the book was kind of weird though, It left me sort of hanging and I do not reall like that, i think that is why I want to read the second book so bad. I really enjoyed this book!
ReplyDeleteI believe, over all, one of the last lines in the book is the one that summed up Katniss' feelings for Peeta. That line was, “Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me." This sentence shows me that Katniss usually calls Peeta the boy with the bread when she is talking to herself. She never calls him that out loud though. This sentence also tells me that she does have feelings for Peeta but more like a caring mother. I also believe that Peeta still loves Katniss, even if she doesn't love him back. I think that is why Peeta was so distant on the ride back. Not because he hated her but because he hated himself for loving her no matter what. Maybe Katniss loves Peeta back but she doesn't want to love anyone. I think the reason the boy with the bread is slipping away from her is because she is so stubborn not to love anyone but her sister.
ReplyDeleteThis book was really good, I never wanted to put it down. I agree with Hannah, this book is great for summer reading! I liked this book because it had romance but also adventure and action. I wished Katniss and Peeta made up at the end of the book. She should have picked who she truly loved. I agree with Maggie as well, I like blogging much better than projects!
ReplyDeletei thought it was a great book i like books with a lot of action.
ReplyDeleteThis was the best tied with the outsiders, but i loved the book because something was always in action and there were not parts where it would tail off and then come back. I enjoyed blogging and seeing every ones elses perspective it was fun. TUNS better than book reports, the book did not leave me hanging i think it is just trying to bring suspense till the next book.
ReplyDeleteThis book had a sence of suspencion, it was full of drama, action and romance. In my opinion this book has great plot. It also gives you an idea of class stature, for example during the reapings I got the idea that the richer you are the less chance you have of being picked for the hunger games. In some parts the book took a turn towards my emotional side so i cried, but other than that I enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to a teen who doesn't like the way he/she is treated.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michelle- the book has an amazing plot that always keeps you on your toes wondering what will happen next! In my opinion though, I personally think that the writter should have made the ending a little longer. What happens to Peeta and Katniss after they win? The ending is not very clear to me. I think that this book was one of the most unique books I have read all year. The writter must have had a lot of imagination. Does the writter of this book really think the world will end up like this? Perhaps she does she think in a way it is already like this? This is confusing me.. but it's a good book!
ReplyDeleteI really did like this book. I thought it was one of the best book I have ever read. I also agree with Michelle, I love how the book had action and suspence. I want to keep reading all of the books in this series. I would defenitly recommend that this book stays on the summer reading list.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Matty on the way the book was written. I think the ending was very odd, the way it just stopped abruptly. I can understand because there is a second book after it, and a third is coming out soon. I like how Peeta and Katniss threatened the capitol with suicide or both living without even realizing it.
ReplyDeleteI personally didn't really like this book. One reason is that the book was all about a giant war between twenty four kids. And its meant as a punishment for the districts.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with molly. This was an amazing book of love, loss, tragedy, and suspense. I loved this book more than any other and I'm sure the sequel will be even better.
ReplyDeleteI thought the book was very engaging as I hoped it would be. I am a procrastinator as you can see I am finishing my posts at 10:55 PM the day before school and I did start this book less then a week from now. Though because I read this with little time to spare I was forced to read it, yet I did not need to be forced. I thought it was very well written and it spoke to me very well. It came to me with messages that I cannot type to express the goodness of it. As I am saying wonderful things about this book, it is also an awful one. I told my parents that it was great but awful implying the wonderful messages of this messed up world they live in, yet really it related an opposite direction to me. Camille had stated one of her earlier posts how she was acting as the capitol a bit. This gave me to thinking how in the book the people of America, high and high- middle class are the capitol. Everyone of us in Saint Andrews eighth grade, maybe even the teachers take everything for granted. We wake in the morning with our head squished in between some fancy pillow in a bedroom fit for queen. We go to our bathroom and wash our faces with some fancy face wash them brush our teeth with some fancy toothpaste and on and on while in school we get an iPad! We are the capitol alone we stuff out mouths with food stuffing more then half of our plate down the trash while others the low class of America and even several of the poor parts around the world they are the people of the districts while we spoil ourselves with more then our little brains can comprehend. That is what I got out of the book the importance of not to waste, to give and to accept and honor everything we have in our lives, even our families as Katniss only really had her sister now. This is the reason why I recommend this book to every child in the world to let them know how important everything in this world is and the respect and honor their lives every chance we can get out of it.
