I think Haymitch is a very good and trustworthy advisor. I feel drinking is his way of covering up who he really is, but I do think he does have a serious drinking problem. I think he knows what he is talking about during the games, and I think he will be able to help Katniss and Peeta. I think he knows more then Katniss thinks he knows, by saying this I think he watches what is going on in the rold. He obviously is smart under the drunk Haymitch that happens to always appear. I feel Haymitch will eventually come out of his addiction and show how smart he really is. People think he is no good, but to me he is the underdog and will win,
I agree I think he will pull through and become a good adviser. When Haymitch was first introduced I thought he was a washed up bum. When I found out that he was going to be the only one helping I was worried for Peeta and Katniss. As training whent on though I saw that he could get his act together and really help. He knows about the games and what really happens in the arena. By knowing this I think he will be a a great mentor.
Haymatch is a smart person but he is hurt. True he is in fine physically, but life after the Hunger Games cannot be pleasant. If you live through the games, it means that twenty-three other people have died, some at your own hands. Then you must continue to live with their deaths. These thoughts must have tortured Haymitch. It would be horrible knowing how twenty-three people died, while people in the Capital celebrated. It makes it hard to be happy after the games are over. Then Haymitch has to mentor two children every year for the rest of his life. Every year they died. He must have tried to help them as best he could, but every year they failed. He would be socially separated from those in the village because they had not been through the same pain as him. His life after the Hunger Games was worse than before. The loneliness and failure must have brought him into a depressed state. He must have found that when he was drunk he wasn't in as much pain. So then, to escape the pain in the only way he knew possible, he became an alcholic. When he met Katniss and Peeta he recognized that they had a chance to win. so he began to coach them in hope of redemption and company. He will however, never be able to escape the pain inflicted upon him by the Capital. Of all the tragic lives in this book, I believe Haymitch's life is the saddest.
After reading 13 through 17, I do realize that my hypothesis is right and that he has pulled through and has turned into a good advisor. While I was reading I was SOOO excited that while having such a bad moment with her calf and hands Haymitch FINALLY pulled through and she obviously had enough sponsors. When her pain was finally relieved I got so excited because I love when I have a cut and I put medicine on it and the pain disappears, and obviously her cuts were dirty because she cannot wash them which means more bacteria getting into the burn. I am just overall glad he is beginning to be a good mentor :)!!!!!!!!!
I am VERY confused about haymatch. Is he trying to help katniss or peeta or even both? Does he really care? Is he not letting the messages about katniss needing water go through to the sponsers because he really and truly did not care, or because he gave her a message? Is it ironic that Katniss found water minutes after concluding that he was giving her a message?
