The mother is battling with herself, she is in a deep depression. She (in my opinion) needs to stop feeling sorry for herself and be a mom. I feel bad for Prim and Katniss who have to sit and watch their poor mother sit and feel sorry for herself. They have to fight for themselves while watching their mother and taking care of her. I think the mother has a mind game, when they have food and are ok she is good and singing and happy. When they are hungry and upset, she sways around the house feeling sorry for herself and ends up in her bed for weeks and weeks. To me, she is also playing mind games with poor Prim who loves her mother and wants to see her well and happy. When Prim sees her happy and singing she thinks she is cured, though it is all the way she is feeling. Her depression is all from the loss of her husband and being a single mother in the seams. I feel she needs to feel happy and have the remembrance of her husband, because no matter how long she is depressed and not a mother her husband is never coming back sadley to say.
I agree with Annie when she says that the mother is very depressed. She spends so much of her time wallowing is self pitty. She cannot take care of her family unless things are going well. If things start to go bad, she makes it worse by crawling back into bed and ignoring the problem. She basically leaves Katniss and Prim to fend for themselves. She abandons them in their time of need and then wonders why thing are not getting better. I know that she lost her husband but that is the time for her step up and take care of the family and not make her daughters take care of her.
I agree completly with Annie and Morgan. Even though the mother lost her husband, she still has two kids. I think she is acting too depressed so far. She is not being a mother to Katniss and Prim because she is forcing her children to rely on themselves. Katniss is caring for Prim and her mother because her mother sits in bed all day. I think children need their mothers to help them grow up and become older. She needs to inspire them so they can be succesfull when they get older. I believe that Katniss and Prim are doing well on their own, but they would be better with their mother supporting both of them. Since their father died I think that they need their mom even more.
