Ch 5-8

  1. I cannot put this book down. I thought that it would be like some of the other summer reading books that I have read; the books that you would avoid until the last minute. It is not. I think that the makeover that Katniss got sounds painfull. It sounds like the people at the capitol really care to much about how they look. Why do they dye their skin different colors? Katniss seems to be the kind of girl that does not care at all about how she looks. The people in the capitol must drive her crazy. I think I would be to afraid to wear the flaming capes. I know that the flames are not real but still there is no way I would wear them. I have to say that Katniss suprised me when she shot the arrow at the gamemakers. For a while I thought that she would get a very low score for shooting an arrow at the gamemakers. Apparently they were looking for someone with a little spunk and fire. I think that Katniss will do great in the Hunger Games.

  2. Chapters 5-8 are very interesting. Katniss' stylists are way too concerned with there looks and that is all they care about. I don't think Katniss cares what she looks like, but she thinks she looks beutiful when she sees herself on the big screen. I think that she was annoyed when the gamemakers didn't pay attention to her, and I think that shooting the arrow at the apple was a good idea. I thought it showed she had attitude and accuracy, both of which she needs for the games. I think she will win the games.

  3. Ch. 5-8 are getting great!! I think in district 12 not many people think about their looks, and in this case Katniss does not. Her makeover sounds sooooo painful, if I were in her place I would probably die. Katniss seems strong and holds her ground and listens to what Haymatch said "listen to your stylist". When she looks in the mirror and sees herself on the tv screen she notices that she is beautiful, and she had never really looked at herself that way. Katniss was very nervous about going in front of the Gamemakers, which she had the right to be. After shooting the arrow perfectly right to the apple, I knew that she was going to get a great score. She was probably very nervous because she dismissed herself and she was VERY worried about her mother and sister. I think overall these 4 chapters were very interesting and it had lots of imagry especially during the makeover.

  4. I agree the book is very addictive. I had just realized I had read four chapters so I told myself I would read one more page and post. I then found myself reading three more pages. I have been reading all morning. I feel not revealing there strategies in training was a good idea. You want to be able to surprise your opponents in the arena. I also feel the makeover and flames is vital to her survival in the games. With good sponsors and the element of surprise I think Katniss has a good chance to win.

  5. I loved chapters 5-8! I agree that Katniss was probably was in a lot of pain during her makeover. I think that the author used very vivid words to portrey the sceen of Katniss getting the makeover. I could really imagine everything that was happening. I would think that Katniss would be very nervous about getting ready for the opening ceremonies and the interviews. She is so busy focusing and thinking about her mother and Prim, that she forgets what is happening around her. I agree with Annie that Katniss was probably insecure about how she looked. She never had the thought to look at herself as beautiful. I think that after she got a makeover, that she felt better about herself and more confident.

  6. For me, these chapters show how different life in the districts is compared to life in the Capital. To Katniss's prep team, appearance is very importantant to them. Katniss however places more value in comfortable clothes that she can hunt in. They were raised in to different environments so naturally they have different values. To Katniss and those in the district, the Capital people must seem despicable because their greatist worry is deciding what to wear that day. The people of the Catipal, have no idea of the harsh livesof others in the district. In the Catpital, death and starvation do not seem very real. they know no pain, hunger, and death because they have not been exposed to it. Life in the district is defined by these tragities. The people struggle to survive and to overcome the set backs they are dealt. Death is reality for them. It is hard to imagine that those in District Tweleve do not hate the Catpital. The people living in the Capital (such as the prep team) are not bad people, they just have a harsh unkind leader.

The red-headed Avonx girl that Katniss recognized caused me to think. Katniss seemed so focased on where the girl and the boy were running away from, but I wonder where they where running away to. If it were true that District Thirteen was obliterated like the Capital claims, then they would be running away to the wilderness where they certainly would die. I can't help but wonder if District Thirteen is still out there and thriving. Perhaps the Capital didn't destroy the district because they couldn't defeat them. They lied to the districts about the district's destruction so they all hopes of rebellion would be smothered. This would lead to the harsh rule that they inflict upon the people; it is just another measure to ensure that a rebellion will not occur. I think that rebellion is the Capital's greatist fear because the districts will win. I also wonder why the Capital would take the time to track down two runaway children and murder one in cold blood. It makes me think that there is more thoughts of rebelling in Panem then they are letting the people believe.

  7. The plot of the book is so far been predictable in the essence that the protagonist lives i a beaten down community with no parental figures and lives of her past knowledge. She then becomes "famous". The Hunger Game is the bases of her fame. also she must face the classic "pinning you against your friend (or at least someone you wouldn't want to hurt". All this being said I still enjoy this book and it is one of the best books i have read.

  8. Chapters 5-8 were, in fact very intresting. This book is very discrptive in these chapters. The capital is VERY LUXURIOUS place.
I agree with Matty on the fact that this plot is very obvious. Someone from a small town (or district in this case) gets famous for doing something incredible.

  9. I think the capitol would be an awful place to live. I know it seems great always having to have everything you want but you also sacrifice so much. How often do you think the people in the capitol walk through the woods or go to to the beach. Never. They live a life where the beauty of nature is never seen. Can you imagine not waking up every day to the beauty of nature. Not seeing the old oak tree strong and proud older than our great gandparents. Or maybe not ever seeing the marsh at sunset when the sun touching the water causes everything to turn a rustic orange. I feel sorry for the people in the capitol who never experienced this.

  10. I think matty is right in the sense the plot is predictable. It is very predictable. I have never seen an action book where the main character died. Katniss will win the hunger games. After that she will train the next winning contestant from district 12. That will be the sequel.

  11. Chapters 5-8 are interesting espically when Katniss gets the make over i dont think that she enjoys it, the reason is that she is a tough girl with a lot of attitude and doesn't care what she looks like. I believe in the end of the book kat will not survive because she will start to think of her sister and mother to much and then get distracted and will not be able to go on and she will die

  12. i agree with shane, katniss is a tomboy and in my opnion i dont think that she would have enjoyed the makeover very much. but i would like to dissagree with how he said that he thought that she was going to die. I dont think that she is going to die because she is strong, and i think that her attitude will help her not think about her mother and sister. eventhough she will miss them a great deal i think that she will be able to continue being strong and survive. well at least i hope she does survive

  13. Chapters 5-8 are really interesting, especially the make over. Although it is apparent that Katniss doesn't enjoy the makeover, I love the fact that she sticks through it without one negative thing to say. I think the only reason why she doesn't like it is because she is a tomboy and she isn't used to it. I think she isn't used to it because in district twelve, there really isn't a reason to get dressed up on a daily occasion.

  14. The more I read of this book the less I want to put it down. I am still questioning Katniss and Peeta's relationship. Katniss seems to want to become friends with Peeta but yet she keeps forcing herself not to become so close to him because eventually they will finish trainging and begin the games where they will have to fight each other. Peeta seems to really like Katniss but is still hesitant of allowing himself to be real close to her. I hope they will let themselves to become more open to each other and friendly before they enter the games.

  15. I believe that the people of the capitol are cruel and evil people. The first reason is that they make people fight to the death just so that the winning district can have food. The capitol has plenty of food to go around for everyone to have a good meal each day. Also they have all these nice appliances and homes and the people of the capitol do not even think of trying to give the districts anything. The whole entire government in this book is like communism because the capitol takes a lot of what the districts produce. Also they limit the amount of varity in jobs, for instince district 12 pretty much is mining. The people in the districts can't travel even if they want a job in another district because they don't have a way of transportation to other districts. The only real way to get to another district is by the capitols train and that is only for important people. This is just like Cuba because people may never leave it unless the government allows them to.

  16. Chapters 5-8 were interesting. I liked it how Peeta and Katniss hat to wear hat of fire. I thought it was funny and awesome how in chapter 6 Katniss got to play with all the button in her room because I think it would be awesome just to click a button and something need just pops up right in front of you. When Peeta and Katniss talk about the red head girl I felt sorry for her because she got her tongue cut off. The red head's friend got speared to death while Katniss and Gale just watched. I personally felt that Katniss and Peeta chose the best approach when they chose what to do in the gym. I would have chose the same things. Near the end of chapter 8 I thought it was hilarious how Katniss' temper got to her and she shot and arrow at the game makers. I can't wait to see what happens next.

  17. Katniss was telling the story of the read-headed Avox girl she recognized. She knew that she could have hid the two children as they were escaping from the hovercraft. I think Katniss felt guilty for not even trying to help the girl and her brother. I would have felt guilty. I think Katniss was so ashamed, that she could not apologize for not having saved them when she later met up with the girl in the Capitol. When I read this part of the story, I wondered if Katniss gave any more thought to the boy who had died than the girl that had survived. I also wondered what the two were running from or to. Was there something the author was not telling you, and was the Capitol hiding something? Did the two kids know something? Where were they even going? It made you wonder if they knew where the "safe" district was. It gave you hope that there was such a place and escape was possible.

  18. I loved reading these four chapters in this wonderful book. Katniss and Peeta arrive in the capitol and there is a lot that will happen in the next few days. They each meet their stylists first. Katniss's stylist was named Cinna and Peeta's stylist was named Portia. The stylist agree to give them a hat of some sort that they light on fire, which the crowd loves. Then they train with the other tributes. I notice that Katniss doesn't have very much self esteem in chapters 7 & 8. She thinks that she doesn't stand a chance in the fight. When she showed her special talent, which was with a bow and arrow, she gets really ticked with the gamekeepers when they don't pay attention to her because they are to drunk to even notice her. She shoots the apple out of the roasted pig, which she almost thought about shooting at the gamekeepers. Later when Katniss and Peeta are looking at the scores given, Katniss receives an 11. I think that the gamekeepers set her up here. I think they wanted to give her a high score so she would be the one to kill first out of all the other tributes. They do this because of the way she acted when she was doing her showing of special skills.

  19. I agree with Morgan R. I think that both Katniss and Peeta are both questioning if they should become friends or not because the games are so close. I am thinking that Katniss and Peeta will team up in the games and it will come down to them two, which will be awkward and build lots of suspense because they both ended up becoming friends

  20. These chapters surprised me! I can't believe that Katniss and Peeta wore hats that had flames of fire coming out of them! I also am so surprised that Katniss and Peeta held hands. That was strange, they are competing they shouldn't do that, I know they were told too, but it just was interesting. Katniss and Peeta's relationship is odd. I think Katniss and Peeta flirt with eachother. They flirted when they didn't want to let go of eachothers hands, which was sweet. That was confusing though because, randomly Peeta decided he didn't want to train with Katniss and their relationship turned into avoiding eachother!! Then Katniss got so upset during training that she shot an arrow throught the game makers apple, and she still got an 11! I thought that she would be in intense trouble after that! The author created suspence then..I kept reading to find out her score! I am looking forward to reading on!!

  21. I am commenting on Abigail's post. Abigail, Haymitch wanted it to look as if Peeta and Katniss were friends, so they would get more sponsors. If they stood out, they would have a better chance of sponsors signing up for them. Also, I think the reason Peeta "didn't want to train" with Katniss was because he wanted her to look like she was surprised when he said he loved her in the interview, as a plan for the both of them to get more sponsors. I think the gamekeepers were surprised at Katniss's temper, and thought that this was what was going to keep her alive in the Games. That, and she could shoot an arrow really well. I also love this book, and still find it suspensefull even though this is my second time reading it!!

  22. Chapters 5-8 were very interesting. I agree with Abigail, that Katniss and Petta have a strange relation ship. If i were Katniss i wouldn't get too close to any of my competitors, because it stinks having to know your going to have to end up killing them or they will have to kill you. It may not be her who kills him but one of them will end up dead, which would make me sad and feel really lonely when it happens. When Katniss Shot that arrow at the gamekeepers i really thought that they would kill her or have a bad punishment for her. I really did not expect them to give her a 11 for her score. Like many people were blogging about way long ago, it is pretty obvious that Katniss is going to win the games. Like JD said, the main character ushually does not die in one of these kinds of books. I feel pretty sure about what is going to happen at the eng, but i still want to keep reading on.

  23. I think chapters 5-8 were amazing. I do not want to put this book down! I think that Katniss is growing up and she doesn't care about her looks. I dont think the people of District 12 care about their apperance because they do not have much to survive so they would enjoy food more than clothes and looks. I don't think Katniss cared about the makeover she was given because she is more of a tomboy. I would not like to have my hair taken off, my skin dyed, and to wear a flaming cape. It sounds very paintful for a makeover. I think the Capitol cares about looks alot because they make all the contestants change their apperance. I like how Katniss looks in the mirror and see's herself on the big screen as a beautiful girl.

  24. I believe that Katniss can win the games. I feel this way because she is a very confidente girl, she is strong, powerful, and i don't think she will give up. I don't think she wil give up because of her mother and sister. Katniss promised her sister she would try her hardest to win, and i do not think that she will break that promise. I also think she will have many powerful strategies that will help her. I believe that Katniss will fight as hard as she can for her mother because she does not want to leave her family. She is concerned about her family and does not know what will happen to them if she doesn't survive.

I was worried and scared that Katniss would mess up her private training the third day. I wanted her to do well so she would get a good score and good remarks. When Katniss shot her first arrow she was a few inches away from the target. The second time she did the same thing, and I thought she would get a low score. When Katniss got angry I felt bad for her because she was not use to the bow so that messed her up. When she shot the arrow towards the gamekeeps I thought they were going to be upset and she would get into trouble. I had know idea what score she was going to get, but I thought it was going to be bad. When they announced that Katniss got an 11 out of 12 I was very suprised. I believe that the gamekeeps gave her this score because they thought she was powerful. I agree with them and that it will help her survive in the Games.

  25. I read this book once before last christmas. There are many parts I don't remember so it's like I never read it before.
It's hard to imagine what Peeta and Katniss looked like when they were on fire. I still haven't been able to picture it. All I come up with is two people with some pokemon figure or something....
The Avox girl was sort of strange, especially since it only referse to her in one part of the book. I can understand why the would try to avoid each other especially after wha happened.
During the training I can understand why Katniss sot the arrow at the game makers. If I was doing my best at something for judges, and they'd rather pay attention to their food, than me, then I would get pretty mad too. I don't think I would have reacted the same way she did, but it certainly worked out to her advantage.

  26. I believe that when Katniss shot the arrow at the Gamemakers they were very angry and upset about the way Katniss treated them. I think that in the heat of the moment Katniss shot the arrow not because she was angry at the Gamemakers but in the Capitol in general for doing this to their citizens. She probably was a little upset at the Gamemakers also. Then when the Gamemakers gave her that score they were trying to get back at her by making her a target in the games. I believe that they thought if she got a very high score that the other tributes would want to take out their best competition first. But I may be reading too much in the book and the Gamemakers could have just liked her confidence and spunk. It could also be that is one of the biggest categories tributes are judged on, other than skill of course.

    ReplyDelete
  27. As the training went on, I can see how the judges would get bored, but then they could just take a break in between districts. Instead they just marvel at their food instead of paying attention to the tributes. A couple of judges did pay attention to her, but the majority of them are just drooling over the pig.
I don't in any way think that what Katniss did was rash. When the job of the Gamemakers is to judge the tributes, then that is what they should be doing. The fact that she stood up to them showed that she had guts, the arrow taking the apple all the way to the other wall, shows she has skill. I think this is why the Gamemakers gave her an 11 instead of something incredibly low, such as a 4 or a 5.

  28. I think that Peeta and Katniss really want to be friends but in the end they know that they must kill eachother so they only spend as much time together as they have to. when they start to argue about each others abillitys, I think that they were trying to make up for the fact that one of them will die, by a member from another didstrict or by a member from there own didstrict. like many of the other students, I think that this book is very addicting. i find myself forgetting how lond i have read and when i finally look at the clock it has been over three hours.

  29. Chapters 5-8 were very interesting and really good! I agree with Hannah and how I dont think Katniss really cares about her appearance because she lives in District 12 were they dont have alot in the first place. She already had many worries about how her days will play out in order to survive. Katniss has little time to worry about her appearance, much less the funds and resoures to do anything about it. I think this is all new to her to be catered to. I believe Peeta and Katniss have a odd relationship, I am wondering how it will end because they are becoming such good friends. I agree with Regan in how Katniss shouldn't get too close to her competitors. I also thought it was funny when she shot the arrow at the Gamemakers to get their attention. The next chapters will hopefully be as good!

  30. Chapters 5-8 were very interesting. I agree with Nate that the stylists are too concerned about Katniss's looks. I think to set Katniss on fire for publicity is flashy and clever but a little drastic. When I was reading these chapters I thought Katniss and Peeta were becoming great friends. I was surprised that Peeta asked to be trained separately. When katniss found out that they would be trained separately i wondered how it would effect their friendship.

  31. this book is very addicting. i dont think katniss cares about her appeareance. i think shes thinking that you dont have to look good to win the games. i think shooting an arrow at the gamemakers was a really stupid idea because she would get a low score until i saw the score she got.

  32. i dissagree with olivia because if she became an ally with peeta she would have a better chance of winning because she could spring out and kill him if its only two of them left.

  33. I think chapters 5-8 were very interesting and made me want to keep reading this book. I also agree with Nick, I don't think Katniss wants to be dressed up. I think she just wants to be in her usual clothes and be comfortable. I thought it was a good idea to shoot the arrow at the gamemakers because it got their attention. It also made them relize that she will be very good competitor in the games.

  34. i agree with charles. katniss was showing her skills to the judges because her life depends on what score she gets. they didnt care about that and would have given her a bad score if she didnt shoot the arrow in the apple. she most likely thought that if she did not do something to get their attention she would fail to get a good score. if she did something rash they would either fail her or realize how amazing she was.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Nick. Katniss does not care about her apperance because she is more focused on surviving. Katniss knows that if she gets side tracted on things that are not important, that she could loose sight in what is really important and get distracted. I also agree with Nick about how Katniss did not make a good deciousion about shooting an arrow at the gamemakers. She could have gotten in very deep trouble.

  36. In chapters five through eight Katniss realizes she could go very far in the hunger games. She finds herself very good at all the training courses which must lift up her self esteem. I believe she is not sure what to think of Peeta since she believes he is a good person but allways second guesses herself wondering if that is just a strategy or not. I believe she is trying not to get as close as possible to Peeta because she does not want to be lured by him. I think seeing her score be an eleven made her smile after the awful experience at the training facility. I believe she was starting to let go of her family a little bit and focus more on the games until she sees Rue which to me tears her heart out. I believe it reminds her of Prim which makes her go back into thinking about her family. I believe Katniss will do very will and get several sponsors but she must keep her focus

  37. In these chapters Katniss learns about the capital and how crazy all of the people are dressed. She also learns that hardley anybody in the capital starves. She meets the other cotestants who were all larger than her.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I my opinion Katniss is a low standard girl growing up with much hardships and struggles to survive. The capitol people, in a way, are similar to us how they have no struggles. Katniss nearly giggles at the site of how the prep team dresses as they tear her hair from her skin. I know she dislikes the capitol very much and this trip just makes her want to hate the capitol more.
Though Katniss does love their food it is upsetting that they get so much and she gets so little. Then of course she sees the avox girl. This breaks her heart and she is filled with guilt after knowing she could have helped them. She hopes the avox enjoys her die, which is an awful thought since she really could not have done anything but get herself turned into an avox as well, or die as the boy did.

  39. I think in these chapters the author does a good job of describing the luxuries that were found on the train and in the capital. It almost felt like I was in there with Katniss and Peeta. It makes me wish I was there ( except for the hunger games part.)I also think the author did a good job of descring Cinna's outfits and character.

  40. I liked Katniss's reaction when the judges weren't paying attention. If I were Katniss I would've done the same thing except I would try to hit the Judges. The judges jobs were to pay attention to the contestants not marvle at the first for then throw random scores to the other contestants. So I think they needed a "tiny" arrow boost
